Phreaker

Mid 2000s. The closest thing you had to a computer or a network was the telephone system. Jake Bellman (15), born blind and bullied at school, lives a lonely life in a run-down apartment, with an absent mother and a resentful older brother. His nights are spent calling strangers, searching for a friendly voice.

One day, one of these strangers leads him to a party line (a phone line shared by multiple subscribers): he discovers a new world of loners, nerds and a community of phone hackers called “phreakers”. With his acute hearing and talent for mimicking voices, Jake begin hacking phone companies, stealing credit cards for food, gadgets, and phone sex. Emboldened, he challenges a gang of outlaw phreakers and starts “swatting” enemies by faking 911 calls.

But now that he’s become the king of the party lines, both respected and feared, he’s also in the crosshairs of the FBI.
